Most Desirable Occupations for 2026 – Statistical Information
When I look at some of the occupational data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), I get a little lost trying to figure out the bottom line. For example, one table of occupational data published by BLS lists hundreds of rows of occupations with multiple columns of associated information (size, growth, salary, and so forth).
Some occupations have lots of growth but low salary. Other occupations have very few openings, but they pay a lot. So, which one is a better opportunity?
Discover the most desirable occupations for 2026 below
In the table below, I created the “Desirability Index” which consolidates data for each occupation into a single ranking. The ranking approach is a very simple statistical measure that normalizes scores across different parameters.
The Desirability Index simply ranks each occupation on the sum of their growth ranking, occupational openings ranking, and salary ranking. In the following, we are looking at projected values for the year 2026 that have an OJT requirement, which is a good target if you are planning for the future.
