QUALIFICATIONS

A certificate, high school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma, or Associate’s degree involving 6 months to a year of clinical instruction-based “Phlebotomy” study and clinical lab credit hours for Phlebotomist certification like Phlebotomy Technician Certification (PTC); accredited by a nationally recognized certifying body, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals (ACA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Healthcare Association (NHA), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA) or National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS); and/or Phlebotomist – On the Job Training (OJT) programs, Apprenticeships, Phlebotomy Healthcare Workforce Job Training or Experience; that include topics covering non-invasive medical procedures likes blood sampling, venipunctures, skin punctures and capillary sticks, pathology lab testing and reporting, therapeutic drug monitoring, medical devices, etc.

The Phlebotomist is an in-demand occupation, in which employment is projected to grow at a blistering 17 percent from 2019 to 2029.

SKILLS/ TRAITS NEEDED

Besides good phlebotomy medical knowledge, and nursing skills, the Phlebotomist must be proactive, agile, and alert with a high degree of patience, perseverance and have great listening, interpersonal, communication skills; besides compassion, dexterity, time management & prioritization, and most importantly be extremely flexible and committed to performing the Phlebotomist duties and responsibilities. They are expected to be “patient-centered” having a good working knowledge of medical terminology; besides being “hands-on” in “contamination-free” blood sampling specimen collection for blood culture, venipunctures, skin punctures, and capillary sticks; with extensive knowledge of pathology lab testing and reporting, therapeutic drug monitoring, medical devices, etc.; be self-organized and liaise & report effectively and efficiently with the Medical Team and the patient’s household taking necessary precautions, comforting, and following the health protocols for the good health, well being, and safety of the patients.

WORK FUNCTIONS

Phlebotomists are medical technicians who draw blood from patients and blood donors. Working at hospitals, pathology labs, medical facilities, and blood donation centers, Phlebotomists play an important support role in the health care system; performing phlebotomy procedures like “contamination-free” blood sampling specimen collection, preparing blood cultures using aseptic techniques, venipunctures, skin punctures, and capillary sticks; besides pathology lab testing and reporting, therapeutic drug monitoring, etc.; while keeping the patient in extreme comfort and providing quality patient care. They may be sometimes needed to work in shifts.
