QUALIFICATIONS

A high school, certificate or Diploma in nursing assistance like the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), involving 3 to 6 months of clinical instruction-based “Nursing Assistance and Healthcare” study and practice credit hours with credentials and certifications accredited by a nationally recognized certifying body, such as National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP), the Licensure obtained from the Department of Public Health (DOPH), to become a Licensed Nursing Assistant; combined with Nursing – On the Job Training (OJT) programs, Apprenticeships, Nursing Healthcare Workforce Job Training or Experience; that include topics and nursing assistance & practice covering the patient personal care, infection prevention, vital signs, taking readings and data collection, communication, mental health, and other basic care.

SKILLS/ TRAITS NEEDED

Besides basic nursing skills, the Nursing Assistant must be professional, ethical, “patient-centric”, proactive, agile, and alert with a high degree of patience, perseverance and have great listening, interpersonal, communication skills, compassion, caring, empathy, dexterity, time management & prioritization; and most importantly be extremely flexible and committed to performing the Nursing Assistant duties and responsibilities. They are expected to be “patient-centered” and comforting, having a good working knowledge of medical terminology, expertise in patient feeding, massaging, dressing wounds, bandaging, clinical, chair-side, and surgical procedures assistance for both physical and mental healthcare and basic health checks, vital signs, readings, and data collection; be self-organized, proactive and liaise & report effectively and efficiently with the Medical Team and the patient’s household; taking necessary precautions, comforting, and following the health protocols for the good health, fitness, well being, and safety of the patients.

WORK FUNCTIONS

A Nursing Assistant – also known as a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) assists the Registered Nurse and provides patients with patient care for various illnesses or medical conditions. Typically, Nursing Assistants perform activities like dressing wounds, cleaning rooms and bed linens, answering patient calls/bells, bathing, feeding and grooming patients, stock supplies, helping with medical procedures, patient admission, and general patient care. Nursing Assistants mostly work in inpatient hospitals, long-term residential facilities, rehabilitation centers, and adult daycare centers. They may be needed to work in shifts.
