Our Mission

NPower creates pathways to economic prosperity by launching digital careers for military veterans and young adults from underserved communities.

In today’s economy, over 50% of all jobs require some degree of technology and digital skill. A recent Microsoft Data Science report estimates that digital job capacity—or the total number of new technology-oriented jobs—in the U.S. will grow to 13 million by 2025.

NPower currently operates in New York, Texas, California, Maryland, Toronto, New Jersey, Missouri, and Michigan.

NPower envisions a future where our domestic technology workforce is diverse, and clear pathways exist for all people regardless of ethnicity, gender, or socio-economic background to succeed in our digital economy.

Cybersecurity

NPower offers FREE accelerated training programs to young adults and veterans who are seeking more advanced IT training.

Cybersecurity is an advanced training course designed for students who are ready to move beyond the basics of IT and tackle more rigorous security specialties. This program includes:

  • 18-week, part time online instruction
  • Opportunity to earn industry-recognized, in-demand  CompTIA Security+ certification
  • Mentoring from senior level cybersecurity professionals and program alumni
  • Career development workshops
  • Job placement assistance with access to a wide range of top employers
  • Opportunity to earn Cybersecurity Support Technician credential (in TX and NJ)*
  • A range of social service and personal development support
  • Access to an elite, supportive alumni network

*U.S. Department of Labor recognition; availability varies by region.

Program Eligibility: Must be an NPower alumnus in good standing, over 21 years of age, CompTIA A+ certified, and have 2+ years of technology experience or a college degree and be willing to submit to a background check and drug test.

This program is available to all NPower alumni residing in any of the NPower locations served (NY, NJ, CA, MI, MO, TX, MD).

Applications are considered on a rolling basis until the class is filled.

The curriculum for this program includes a NetAcad learning module courtesy of the Cisco Networking Academy.

Tech Fundamentals

Launch A Career in IT

Our tuition-FREE program offers all the skills and coaching you need to jumpstart your career in technology.

In our Tech Fundamentals program, you will master the basics of IT with real world application and credentials. This program includes:

  • 16-week instructor-led virtual training
  • Opportunity for a paid internship or a project-based learning experience
  • Opportunity to earn industry-recognized CompTIA certifications and an IT Generalist Apprenticeship credential*
  • Exposure to Microsoft, Cisco, AWS, and other leading technologies
  • Mentoring from senior-level IT professionals
  • Employment readiness workshops
  • Job placement assistance with access to a wide range of top employers
  • A full range of ongoing social service and personal development support

Volunteer with NPower

Engage Employees to Prepare Diverse Tech Talent

Volunteers are a key element of NPower’s program success. As part of preparing our students for a career in technology, we engage tech professionals throughout our program to share their knowledge, experience, insight, and advice. Interacting and learning from professionals in the industry is a crucial part to our students becoming well rounded professionals.

NPower offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities for corporate partners to engage employees in high impact, meaningful experiences with the veterans, military spouses, and young adults from underserved communities enrolled in our free tech training program. IT professionals from senior executives to new hires are encouraged to share their career knowledge and experience, preparing students to launch tech careers with real-world advice.

Connect with NPower students in-person or virtually, in small or large group settings, and for short or long-term projects. NPower can create a customized volunteer experience suited to your team’s needs that readies each student for career success.

Host a Technology Internship

Partner to Build Diverse Tech Talent

NPower’s in-class IT training program prepares young adults from underserved communities to launch tech careers. Our program includes professional mentoring, career development and the opportunity to obtain in-demand certifications.

After 16 weeks of intensive hands-on technical and soft-skills training, our students are placed on 7-week (minimum) sponsored* internships with top corporations and nonprofits to exercise their skills in the workforce.

Q Where are NPower programs located?

Currently, we only accept applications from U.S. residents in or near the following cities: New York City; Newark or Jersey City, New Jersey; Dallas, Texas; Detroit, Michigan; Baltimore, Maryland; St. Louis, Missouri; and San Jose, California. Q If I do NOT live in one of the cities NPower operates, can I still apply for virtual classes?

Unfortunately not at this time. As an organization dedicated to matching trainees with opportunities in digital careers we are currently only offering online courses within our current geographic footprint where we have strong employer partnerships to support post-program placements. As we look to increase our impact and reach more young adults, veterans and veteran spouses we may consider expanding to more locations in the future.

Q What are the requirements to be accepted?

To qualify for our Tech Fundamentals programs, you must be a young adult, 18–25 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent and legally authorized to work in the US.

OR

A military veteran, reservist or spouse of a military veteran, over 21 years of age, currently serving or honorably discharged, and legally authorized to work in the US.

Q Why does NPower serve only young adults and veterans?

Since NPower was founded almost 20 years ago, our mission has been to serve those that need us most. Disconnected young adults, ages 18–25 years old, represent the talent pipeline of the future but often need support gaining the skills needed to enter the workforce. Veterans and veteran spouses often experience significant challenges and difficulties transitioning to civilian life and translating their military experience into successful high-paying careers.

Q Is there a cost to participate in the programs?

No, our programs are 100% tuition-free to all accepted participants. We do ask that you come ready and determined to put in the work, trust the process, and maintain a professional attitude.

Q Is there a stipend?

As our programs are free and only half day, we do not offer additional financial support. Many of our students also work part-time, before, after class or on the weekends. Our staff can help you find programs that may assist with covering financial responsibilities such as housing, utilities, food, or child care expenses.
